Contract awarded for last of four town projects

The town has awarded the contract for the last of four major construction projects in the community for 2014.

The town has awarded the contract for the last of four major construction projects in the community for 2014.

At council's regular meeting on April 14, members were told three bids were received by the town for the contract to rebuild 230 metres of road surface along 42 Street near the Innisfail Auction Mart.

The $407,688.22 bid by Border Paving Ltd., which includes GST and a 10 per cent contingency, was $80,000 less than the next lowest bid. It was recommended by Tagish Engineering and accepted by council.

There are no water lines or sanitary sewer lines in this segment of road. A paved path for pedestrians will be built along its south edge to connect to the trail along the east side of 42 Avenue/Highway 2A.

As 42 Street is considered one of the two main east-west travelling arteries in town, administration said it's hoped work can start in late May and be completed within two weeks, in time for the scheduled start date for Phase 3 of the Downtown Revitalization Project. This work will include the rebuilding of Main Street, the town's other east-west travelling artery.

Detour signs for the 42 Street project will be placed once construction begins. Options include using 49 Avenue to access 42 Avenue and using 50 Street.

Earlier this year, town council approved contracts for the three other major projects, including the Downtown Revitalization Project, which is costing $2,261,235.17.

Council also awarded the $424,000 (including GST) contract for the replacement of the water and sanitary sewer lines in the lane south of 45th Street between 48 and 49 avenues.

At council's March 24 meeting, a contract was awarded for the $2.675 million (including GST) contract to construct infrastructure for the new multi-million dollar Napoleon Meadows subdivision.
