Christmas Eve play is open to the public

Members of the Penhold Community Church are gearing up for a memorable and special night on Christmas Eve.

Eighteen volunteer musicians, actors and narrators have been busily prepping since October for a three-part performance that will start at 6:45 p.m.

“There will be Christmas carols that can be sung by the audience members as well,” explained director Shelley Cryer.

“It's fast moving and lively,” she said of the 30-minute performance.

She said the program, What Christmas Is, breaks Christmas into three parts: a family gathered around the Christmas tree opening gifts; Jesus' birth; and a group of carollers singing.

“It shows there's more to Christmas than just gifts, or just carollers,” she said, explaining that the three scenes work together to create a special meaning.

“We do a play every year. We try and get as much of the community involved,” she said, explaining the church, located on Minto Street behind the garage station, has a small congregation and always welcomes new members.

The performance is free of charge. Cryer said it is open to everyone and treats will be handed out at the end of the evening.

After the performance, the pastor will speak to the audience about the play, but Cryer said it will not be a “preach session.”

“It will be on the Christmas story,” she said.
