Council gave the thumbs-up to booze in the bleachers as Innisfail prepares to host the Senior AA/A Provincials April 5-7.

Changes to the arena's liquor licence will allow alcohol to be served during games and at the Saturday night cabaret until 1 a.m.

“The application from the Eagles is very detailed,” said Terry Welsh, director of community and protective services, noting first aid among other areas. “The Eagles have definitely done their homework as far as the security that needs to be provided.”

A two-drink limit will be imposed in the stands. Only beer will be served.

“I know I always have concerns about alcohol in the stands every time this has come to us in the past decade,” said Coun. Tracey Walker.

Eagles board members said the intent is not to turn the arena into a bar atmosphere but to enhance the quality of the provincial hockey tournament experience.

“This is a very special event,” said Mayor Jim Romane. “This isn't something we'd be making a habit of.”

The motion was approved unanimously Feb. 25.
