The Spruce View & District Lions Club is proud to announce Fred and Bernice Andersen as its 2014 Citizens of the Year.

Fred and Bernice exemplify the spirit of community service by their involvement and interest in people and community activities.

Fred was born in the Dickson area. He has deep roots and commitment to the Dickson Store Museum, Danish Canadian Museum, Bethany Lutheran Church, and the Stephansson Icelandic Society, where he currently serves as the treasurer.

In Markerville, be it the creamery, Lutheran Church or Fensala Hall, he commits countless hours to participating or spearheading events, including acting and directing duties at the local theatre, or attending to duties at the church when the pastor is away, and opening the creamery daily as he is the ìofficial morning coffee makerî.

Bernice, known as the ìhistorianî, was born in Markerville. She has been a dedicated member of the Icelandic Society for 40 years. Bernice has held positions at every level of the society board, and sits on many Icelandic society volunteer committees.

Her attention to detail, knowledge of local history and enthusiasm benefits committee decisions and enhances special events. Her Icelandic heritage reaches out to provincial, national and international Icelandic clubs. She ensures her community is known worldwide.

Bernice is as equally involved with the Lutheran Church, Dixon Store and Danish Canadian museums, Vonin Icelandic Ladies Aid, and all Markerville activities and events.

Together they take on the task of the Annual Viking Cup Golf Tournament, (in its 10th year), work bingos and casinos, sing with the RaMar Carol Singers, entertain at the seniors' lodges, and just too many others to list.

Their ongoing volunteering, organizing and facilitating of fundraising events does not go unnoticed.

Fred and Bernice strive to make a difference by sharing their talents and resources.

Their award will be presented at the Spruce View Lions Charter Night on Jan.18 at the Spruce View Community Hall.
