In September, Parkland Regional Library and the Olds Municipal Library are celebrating Library Card Sign-up Month.

The purpose is remind families that "a library card is the first step towards academic achievement, lifelong learning, and a world of discovery," an Olds library news release says.

"A library card opens a world of infinite possibilities through resources and services that give students the tools to achieve academic success."

The library offers everything from STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics) programs and homework help to early literacy programs that get children ready for school.

Public libraries also provide a place for individuals and families to relax and socialize.

Olds Municipal Library has free Wi-Fi, high-speed internet and public programs for all ages.

“Libraries play an important role in the education and development of children,” says Olds Municipal Library manager Lesley Sackett Winfield.

She notes it provides early childhood and literacy development programs that help kids get ready for school as well as homework help.

It also offers hands-on technology exploration opportunities through robotics and makerspaces.

"Our library provides access to resources and programs for people of all ages and stages of life. There’s really something for everyone, and it’s all free with a library card,” Winfield says.

Visit Olds Municipal Library for more information and to sign up for a library card.

Those interested are also encouraged to check out the library's website at oml.prl.ab.ca where there's information on e-books and audiobooks, digital magazines and newspapers, and more.

In celebration of Library Card Sign up Month, the library will be hosting Lunch for the Library on Sept. 7 in the Canadian Tire Parking lot from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. A hotdog with all the fixings, some chips and a drink will cost $5.

Olds residents can sign up for a library card there or go to the library any time this month to get a free membership for the whole family.
