CARSTAIRS -- It was a true community effort when several local groups came together to make a quilt for the Carstairs Public Library's Story Time.

"The library saw a need for a Story Time quilt for its youngest members," said Paige Gil of the Carstairs Friends of the Library. "Joanne Merrick, library manager, requested if the Friends of the Carstairs Library Society could fund the idea. The Friends in turn asked the Mountain View Quilters if they would be willing to make a quilt for Story Time."

GIl said the local quilting group was more than happy to oblige. The Friends of the Library then started a fundraising campaign called Share a Square.

"The quilters designed the king size quilt," she said. "Each of the 60 10-inch squares is bright in colour and depicts baby animals, nursery rhymes, comic characters and other fun stuff. The inside border has the handprints of the youngest library members."

Much of the material was donated by local residents and members for the quilting group, said Gil.

"What wasn't donated was funded by the friends' fundraising efforts," she said. "The quilters donated their time to sew the quilt. They know how important the story time quilt would be to the library. It'll give the little ones a comfortable warm place to sit."
