More than a dozen students receive music scholarships

More than $3,400 in scholarship money was handed out to dozens of Olds and District Music Teachers Association music students following the association's annual recital on Nov. 22.

More than $3,400 in scholarship money was handed out to dozens of Olds and District Music Teachers Association music students following the association's annual recital on Nov. 22.

Students from the Olds area performed a variety of piano, vocal and instrumental selections during the recital, which is now in roughly its 25th year, at Olds First Baptist Church before the scholarships were presented to those students who received the highest examination marks for the 2012-13 teaching year.

With support from the local business community, scholarships were also awarded to each student who had received a minimum mark of 80 per cent.

The recipients in the piano category were Noah Martens (Grade 1), Mataya Redpath (Grade 2), Brooke Jackson (Grade 3), Claire Martin (Grade 4), Caleb Kalsbeek (Grade 6), Cali Wright (Grade 7), Kailee Lipiec (Grade 8), Erin Fredlund (Grade 9) and Lucy Sawatzky (Grade 10).

Kailee Lipiec also received the Jean Rix Memorial Award, which is handed out in honour of a former association member and piano teacher.

The recipients in the voice category were Anja Kelly (Grade 2), Terence Kelly (Grade 3), Tatum Olsen (Grade 4) and Claire Nixon (Grade 7).

The instrumental category recipients were Ryder Falk (Grade 2 percussion), Bryce Cotton (Grade 4 percussion), Wesley Wilks (Grade 1 trombone and Grade 2 tuba), Logan Miller (Grade 4 alto sax) and John Lukacs (Grade 6 violin).

The recipients for theory rudiments were Claire Martin (basic), Sage Jackson (intermediate) and Renay Bales (advanced).

And honourable mention went to Ciara Ritchie (Grade 1 piano), Eva Marie Parker, (Grade 2 piano), Justin Cissell (Grade 3 piano), Sage Jackson and Joshua Robinson (Grade 6 piano), Carter Cissell (Grade 8 piano), Sage Hughes, (Grade 4 voice), Jalene Taylor, Jenita Layden, Jayna Wright, Cali Wright, Sarah Robinson, Kayla Jansen, Logan Miller, Brett Andrews, Katelyn Collin and Jessica Layden in basic rudiments, Aaron Martel and Sarah Robinson in intermediate rudiments and Carter Cissell, Alex Kimber, Kailee Lipiec and Wesley Wilks in advanced rudiments.
