INNISFAIL – Get ready for some family fun.

Families in Innisfail and Penhold can join in the annual Family Day activities Feb. 18 in Penhold and Feb. 19 in Innisfail.

"We have a lot of our old favourites and we have some new stuff that puts a spotlight on the town as well,” said Kane Williams, recreation program coordinator for the Town of Innisfail.

The town is teaming up with the Innisfail Kinsmen Club again to provide activities from 12 noon until 3 p.m. at the Innisfail Arena and the Aquatic Centre. They include outdoor skating, a Kinsmen barbecue, sleigh rides, a fire truck display, kids’ activities by the Boys and Girls Club and a demonstration and tour by the Innisfail Nordic Ski Club.

"The Innisfail Nordic Ski Club will be doing an instruction (demo) and lesson, (followed by) a tour towards Napoleon Lake,” said Williams.

In addition, families can learn to curl.

"From 10 a.m. until 12 noon the Innisfail Curling Club is going to be hosting a free ‘try-it’ opportunity for families,” explained Williams. "There’s no cost and no equipment required.”

The Family Day swim takes place at the Aquatic Centre from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m.

Cash donations and non-perishable food items for the Innisfail and District Food Bank will be collected at both locations, as will donations for the Kinsmen Club’s cystic fibrosis program.

The Innisfail Lions Club is also sponsoring a free ski day from 1 to 5 p.m. at the Innisfail Ski Hill. Both ski rentals and lift tickets are free of charge.

More information and event times can be found on the Innisfail Recreation and Culture Facebook page, Williams noted.

Penhold also has plenty of activities on Sunday.

"It’s our annual Winter Fest,” said Melanie Willerth, events and communications coordinator for the Town of Penhold. "Last year it was on the (Family Day) Monday, but this year we are doing it on the Sunday because we are holding it at the multiplex.”

The event runs from 3 to 5 p.m. on Feb. 18.

"There’s going to be indoor and outdoor activities. We’ll have some firepits going so people can roast marshmallows and hotdogs, and we’re also going to have sleigh rides happening outside,” said Willerth.

"We’re also going to have some bouncy castles, face-painting and balloon animals.”

In addition, other activities, including virtual reality game booths, will help fundraise for the Penhold Skate Park, and popcorn and cotton candy will be sold to help raise funds for the Penhold Youth Club, and the skate park.

"It’s a chance for families to spend some quality family time together, get to know their neighbours in the community and experience all that Penhold has to offer,” Willerth concluded.
