DIDSBURY - The Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) has laid two charges against Whitecap Resources Inc. following a release from a well outside Didsbury in 2021, officials announced today.

The company is facing two counts under the Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act.

One count alleges the company released or permitted the release into the environment of a substance that causes or may cause a significant adverse effect.

The other count alleges the company failed to report that release to the regulator as soon as they knew or ought to have known of the release.

The leak involved condensate and raw gas, according to the AER in a press release issued June 16.

All contraventions are alleged to have occurred near Didsbury on or about June 20, 2021.

The first appearance in court will be on July 31 at the Alberta Court of Justice in Didsbury.

As the matter is now before the court, the AER will not have further comment, officials said.

The AER oversees oil and gas development in the province.

A Whitecap Resources spokesperson told the Albertan that in view of the matter being before the courts the company has no comment.
