DIDSBURY - The Bethany Care Society – which operates the 100-suite Bethany Didsbury facility – is working closely with police after a care worker at the facility was charged last week with allegedly assaulting an 87-year-old resident, say officials.

“We are actively cooperating with the RCMP in their investigation,” the society said in statement provided to the Albertan on Tuesday. “We will continue to work closely with the authorities while respecting the privacy and dignity of those involved.

“Our primary focus remains ensuring the well-being of all residents in our care."

“The individual is on administrative leave pending the outcome.”

Maximino Garcia, 49, was charged after police received information on Nov. 7 regarding the physical abuse of a senior at a residential care facility in Didsbury.

The alleged offence took place between September 2021 and August 2022, say police.

Didsbury RCMP had declined to identify the facility, with Staff Sgt. Steven Browne saying, “We are not naming the facility because the facility is not culpable.”

Garcia has been released from custody pending a Nov. 20 court appearance in Didsbury.

The Calgary-based Bethany Care Society is a non-profit organization that provides seniors housing and services.

Bethany Didsbury provides residents care by licensed practical nurses, health care aides and other care providers in a designated supportive living setting, according to the society's website.
