DIDSBURY - Council has approved a plan by the College Green Home Owners Association (HOA) to construct a gazebo in the common green space on land leased from the town in the neighbourhood.

The move came by way of motion at the recent council meeting.

The gazebo will be approximately 12 feet by 14 feet in size and is intended to be a common meeting place for residents and the public-at-large, according to the association’s board of directors.

“The board feels that adding a meeting place like this would make our community more attractive and assist the retired people living here with a more social atmosphere,” the directors said in a letter to the town.

“The board wanted to ensure anything we proposed would be within walking distance of the homes and be a multi-use area where some social event could be scheduled by the social committee.”

The gazebo itself will be a timber frame, aluminum roofed and open walled structure on a brick patio for all-season use, council heard.

A lease agreement between the association and town requires council approval for an encumbrance installed within the leased land.

“If there was ever a reason that any exaction of this area was required, College Green HOA is prepared to take responsibility to replace the patio stones once the area is brought back to grade.”

The gazebo will remain on public land and can be amended into the HOA lease agreement as an optional requirement of the HOA, said the Town of Didsbury's chief administrative officer, Ethan Gorner.
