Enhanced police officer conducted 69 patrols in Carstairs

CARSTAIRS - RCMP Const. Bryan Walkey, who is the enhanced RCMP officer in Carstairs, conducted more than 60 proactive patrols in the municipality in the first three months of 2023, according to a report presented to council last week.

Didsbury RCMP Staff Sgt. Steven Browne appeared before council as a delegation on June 12, presenting crime statistics for the period of January to March.

The Town of Carstairs has a contract with Didsbury RCMP that includes the enhanced policing position.

The quarterly report outlined action conducted as part of the four community priorities.

Under the reduce property crime - habitual offender management priority, the report stated that: “During this reporting period, Const. Walkey conducted 69 proactive patrols within Carstairs and 204 additional proactive patrols were conducted by Didsbury RCMP detachment members. There were no habitual offenders residing or being monitored in Carstairs.”

Under the community enhancement priority, the report stated, in part: “Const. Walkey attended the Carstairs Elementary School to judge a science fair with Carstairs peace officer” and “Walkey met with school counsellor and other emergency response teams to discuss an up and coming mock accident to be put on for the students (in May).”

Under the traffic enforcement/education priority, the report stated, in part: “Const. Walkey conducted 202 vehicle checks during this reporting period. Eight violation tickets were issued by Const. Walkey for other moving/non-moving offences, stop sign violations and fail to produce documents.”

Under the criminal investigations priority, the report states: “Const. Walkey responded to 65 calls for service. Criminal charges were sworn regarding the following investigations: four fail to comply/breach of court release conditions.”

Council received Browne’s report as information.
