CARSTAIRS - Building permit construction values totalled $27.9 million in 2023, including for industrial and commercial projects valued $7.1 million, up from $1.9 million in 2022, according to statistics presented to council recently.

In all, 42 permits were issued for single family dwellings totalling $15.8 million, 10 permits for multi-family dwellings valued at $3.5 million, 31 permits for additions and renovations totalling $741,500, and 32 permits for decks and ramps totalling $195,3432.

In all, 139 permits were issued totalling $27,928,159, including $20,769,159 for residential and $7,160,000 for commercial/industrial.

In 2022, residential permits were valued at $20,377,195 and $1,910,000 for commercial/industrial.

In 2022 the total permit value was about $21 million.

Town chief administrative officer Rick Blair says the higher values in 2023 are a good indication of increased building activity in town.

“We sure are happy about how busy things are right now,” he said.

Council remuneration remains unchanged in 2024

In other town council news, councillors and mayor Lance Colby will be receiving the same level of remuneration in 2024 as they did in 2023.

Blair explained that the town’s remuneration policy is tied closely to population growth.

“So until there is a census there won’t be any change in council remuneration or per diem,” he said. “Nothing has changed for council.”

In 2024, mayor Colby will receive a monthly salary of $2,351.04, the deputy mayor will receive $2,045.40, and councillors will receive $1,810.30.

The per diem rate for two hours or less is $90, for half a day it is $180, and for a full day it is $360. All per diems include a $30 per hour for travel time.
