A Sundre man was recently fined over the unauthorized discharge of a firearm.

David Victor Franke, 26, of Sundre, faced numerous charges that stemmed from an incident dating back to last spring.

On April 15 at approximately 4:40 a.m., a concerned citizen called police to report that he could see vehicle headlights on the east side of the Red Deer River just north of River Road. The caller further reported that he could hear numerous gunshots being fired.

Police attended the scene and located two males that were attempting to leave the area in a pickup truck. Police conducted a traffic stop and found both the driver and passenger impaired by alcohol. A search of the vehicle turned up two restricted handguns, reported the Sundre RCMP.

Franke was subsequently officially charged with the following offences: impaired operation of a motor vehicle; impaired operation of a motor vehicle while blood alcohol content more than the legal limit; unlawful transport of a firearm; and careless use of a firearm.

After several appearances in Didsbury provincial court, he was sentenced Nov. 9.

An Alberta Court Checks official told the Round Up Franke pleaded guilty to a lesser offence of unauthorized hunt/discharge of firearm and fined $1,000. All the other charges were withdrawn.
