Olds College has been celebrating its 100th year in education and training for the past several months. “The College” has a special relationship with the community of Olds and vice versa. Our centennial year has been unfolding every bit as well as planned so far, but the two biggest of our celebratory weekends are yet to come and are right around the corner.

These big ones will both be bringing thousands of visitors each to our community.

For many citizens, and especially the businesses of Olds, this will be a great opportunity…. IF you are ready.

Will you have extra staff scheduled, particularly if you are in the food, beverage, hospitality and retail sectors?

The weekend of June 20 to 23, the Olds community event will run in conjunction with the J.C. (Jack) Anderson Charity Auto Auction.

This will be of great interest to people from Olds and region, but there will be hundreds of people coming from outside our region for these unique events.

Then in July, Olds College is hosting the World Plowing Championship from July 19 and 20, with competitors and fans from over 30 countries worldwide coming to Olds for this celebration of rural living, rural culture and agriculture. Ministers of agriculture and trade from several countries in Southeastern Europe are having their annual summit meeting in Olds as part of the Plowing Championship.

There will be hundreds and even thousands of visitors among these events.

There will be much to see and do for the people of Olds and Mountain View County, and there will be large volumes of consumer traffic for the many business that support the college.

This will be a great boon to local merchants if they're prepared, so on behalf of Olds College and the many committed volunteers who have been planning these major events with us for months and years: are you ready?

Jordan Cleland.
