Playground promotes fun, understanding

Kudos to all those involved in the grand opening of the renovated Ryan Boutwell Memorial Park.

Kudos to all those involved in the grand opening of the renovated Ryan Boutwell Memorial Park.

The approximately $180,000 renovation project, financed by the town, the school division and a fundraising effort by local parents and individuals, shows just how caring and accommodating this community can be.

In general, the playground, located behind the Horizon School, is for the students attending that school, which works with kids with special needs.

However, during grand opening ceremonies May 19, school officials stressed that they're happy to see kids from other schools or the public in general using their play structures.

Those structures are designed to accommodate larger kids because Horizon School students range in age into their late teens. They also include facilities designed to be wheelchair accessible.

But although those structures are thus a little bigger than you might find in similar facilities in other playgrounds, they perform the same function – fun is fun.

A facility that integrates students of all ages and abilities is good for society in general, helping to promote understanding and acceptance.
