Parking RVs on front yard or driveway is no problem

Following is an open letter to Olds town council and town staff responsible for the drafting of the community standards bylaw 2015-08, RV owners and future RV owners:

I would like to refer to section 5:10:D that states “during the period November 1 to March 31 no person shall park a recreational vehicle on a driveway or front yard for a period exceeding 36 hours.”

I am at a loss; no one has been able to explain why it is OK to park our RV trailer in our driveway part of the year, but as of November 1, it becomes a problem. Certainly this is not the time for choosing Communities in Bloom.

Does our RV suddenly become less aesthetic during the fall and winter? Would Christmas lights on it help?

It has been suggested that the issue may be one to do with snow removal. Actually having our RV in our driveway during winter is beneficial, because there is no snow to remove from under the RV – it is on the RV roof. There is less snow on our driveway to pile on to our lawn.

We live in an area of town where we back on to the park and there is no access to our backyard in which to park our trailer.

As for a side yard, it's hardly visible from the front because we beautify it with a spruce tree and cedars. It would certainly not be more aesthetic to cut these down so we could back our RV into a side yard.

As well, having our RV in our driveway during winter eliminates the infestation of mice, which we have experienced by storing it elsewhere.

So what is the reason? RV owners in Olds need to use their voices and tell the town there is no problem created by having your RV in your driveway during the winter months. Speak up!

But will we be heard?
