Mothers

If there's any day that deserves as much attention as Christmas receives it's definitely Mother's Day. Mother's Day takes place this Sunday, May 12. Many of us will use this day to make mom breakfast in bed or maybe take her out for lunch.

If there's any day that deserves as much attention as Christmas receives it's definitely Mother's Day.

Mother's Day takes place this Sunday, May 12. Many of us will use this day to make mom breakfast in bed or maybe take her out for lunch. Many of us will buy her flowers, simple gifts or take her out to a movie.

It's funny that we don't spend a whole year planning for this holiday, like many of us do for Christmas. We don't make lists, stress to ensure everything's just right, and Mother's Day is not regularly included in most household annual budgets.

Instead, we celebrate this holiday with simple gestures. Schoolchildren craft Mother's Day cards in local classrooms. Some of us will bake her cookies or muffins, sometimes cake. We'll spend an afternoon at the park with her, or maybe share a bike ride with her.

Most of us won't spend months of planning or lavish amounts of money in preparation for Mother's Day. We won't decorate the house with lights or hold Mother's Day parades, and it's not a traditional day for fireworks.

While it may deserve such attention, perhaps Mother's Day is best celebrated with simple gestures. After all, we know in our hearts that what she really wants is simply to spend time with her children. We all know that's what she desires more than breakfast in bed, fancy gifts or big celebrations.

Mom is a special person. She is naturally unselfish. She worries only about our needs. She feeds us, clothes us and is always on our side, no matter what. She appreciates the gifts she receives, but cares more about what she can provide.

We could prepare a turkey dinner for Mother' Day. We could organize a parade. We could light up the sky with explosives. But we all know she'll be happiest if you just set the day aside to spend time with her.

We know that Mom is always there for us when she is needed. She was there for us on our first day of school, she was there for us when we graduated, she helped us pack when we first left home and she always has a seat for us at the kitchen table like we never left. Sunday is the day to show your appreciation and to show mom how much we love her.

Some of us might not be able to spend time with mom this Mother's Day. Those of you will keep her happy by simply keeping her in your hearts. It is a simple gesture to provide the one who offered the whole world to us.

Happy Mother's Day!
