Letter: Empathy is the best enabler of tolerance

Only good parenting will work to help crackdown on hate-motivated crimes, says letter writer

Re: Commentary: Fighting hate good for Alberta

I don't think any government intervention will help our RCMP crackdown on hate-motivated crimes. It's only good parenting that will work.

Prevention is better than cure. It's well known most people have empathy by the time they are four years old -- if they don't, it's too late.

And empathy is the best enabler of tolerance for differences and prevents development of hate.

If parents don't have empathy it's unlikely their children will. There can be few exceptions however, they are not the norm.
