Letter: Big spending on big projects questioned

Re: Creation of multi-purpose leisure centre in the region suggested

After reading the several articles about the creation of a multi-purpose leisure centre in this week’s paper, I am concerned with our ongoing process of spending large amounts of money for projects that are not necessarily wanted or needed by our community.

We have excellent facilities in our town that currently struggle to be managed to their potential. Maybe we should focus on maximizing our current investments rather than looking at the next biggest thing.

We just went through a period of elections that should have put elected officials in touch with the town and surrounding communities.

Is it appropriate to spend almost $200,000 for an outside consulting company to tell us what seems to be obvious?

What happened to the local experience and the ability of local people to determine what is best for us?

I have been an international-level athlete and understand the need for good sports facilities but it appears to me that this project is an attempt to get the next biggest project rather than support local people and local clubs to develop talent and work at keeping our population healthy and active.
