In praise of security measures at Bowden post office

Security just the cost of doing business, reader says
opinion

I saw the story Bowden post office broken into twice on the Mountain View Today website.

Brenda at the post office has now informed me they are getting an alarm system put in. I’m not sure if that meant a camera; however, at least an alarm on the door.

I feel strongly that Canada Post needs to install CCTV cameras, simply to protect its employees and the public. Not having them is an invitation for thieves and low-lifes to target their outlets.

Today not a lot of money is left around. However, some people order packages containing expensive items. Cameras would record whoever is responsible. It’s simply a new reality of life today. It’s 2020, not 1920. And it’s simply a tax writeoff; it’s the cost of doing business.

An employer has an obligation to ensure their working facilities are safe and secure for all employees, especially when you have ladies working alone. Yet Canada Post has not been doing that in the past. Allegedly not even an emergency panic alarm.

You don’t wait for a serious incident to occur and then act afterwards. It’s a deterrent and certainly assists law enforcement with evidence to catch the bad guys.

The town hall across the street has a security camera. However, I understand it’s not a very good one; it can’t see my house across the street at night, because there’s a tree in the way. However they have panic alarms at the town office and the library, just in the unlikely event they’re needed.

I have four cameras on my house, just as a precaution. Canada Post should not be relying on neighbours to provide video security for them.

I worked for 7-Eleven stores for 10 years, back in the '80s and '90s. We had no cameras in the stores at that time.

That didn’t change until a tragic incident happened in Calgary when a young female employee was abducted from the store and murdered (in approximately 1991 at the Rundlehorn store).

Only then did the company install real-time cameras and had two on night shift.

I’m glad to hear that action is finally being taken in this case.

I watch the location from my house, however I can’t be watching all day and night.
