Honour homegrown NHL player

One year ago I made a presentation to town council and I am still waiting for a response and some indication of followup which was to occur in the fall (2015).

One year ago I made a presentation to town council and I am still waiting for a response and some indication of followup which was to occur in the fall (2015).

My presentation dealt with recognition and acknowledgement of one of our outstanding athletes. The young man was the first hockey player born in Olds to have a one-way contract to the NHL. He played all his hockey (minor through junior) in Olds.

There have been others who played junior hockey in Olds and progressed to the big show but this individual was the first and only true Olds-developed player.

There have also been many hockey players from this town to play professionally and/or achieve at very high levels. We have been acknowledged as a hockey town for many decades. Our town arenas and junior hockey team have provided much development and entertainment for more than 20 years.

This player to some degree is a product of our community, our facilities and our programs supported by the town.

I believe we should show our appreciation and recognize this player who not only is a role model for all the youth in the community but an ambassador for Olds. We should acknowledge our successes and those who achieve at the highest possible level.

I am not aware of any recognition to date but the time is right to acknowledge one of our own with a plaque in the arena, a street, the Zamboni or whatever, but let's not let the opportunity pass without some leadership in this regard.
