Butterfly worshipper's letter hypocritical

I just must respond to the letter from the butterfly worshipper, Jacquie Poier, in the Jan. 7th issue of the Albertan responding to an earlier letter to the editor (Dec. 17 issue).

I just must respond to the letter from the butterfly worshipper, Jacquie Poier, in the Jan. 7th issue of the Albertan responding to an earlier letter to the editor (Dec. 17 issue).

She ends her letter wishing everyone free speech but the message in her letter seems to be one of suppressing free speech by decrying the local paper for being "so blatantly bias and discriminatory" for publishing a letter in which the author expresses an opinion.

It is obvious from Jacquie's letter that she did not agree with the opinion expressed in the initial letter and, indeed, that she was offended by it.

But in the spirit of free speech, that letter writer had every right to express her opinion and have it published as a letter to the editoró which is a forum meant specifically for people to exercise that right.

I understand there are good reasons why people hate the Christmas season.

As for Jacquie's remark about people's attitude this time of year, I must disagree with that.

In my dealings in December I was expecting to see some of the rude, miserable behaviour that she mentioned because people are more stressed and hurried this time of yearó but I didn't encounter it anywhere.

Often we get back the attitude which we ourselves portray.

And, finally, I do agree the butterflies are beautiful and a truly unique creature but they are not worthy of my worship.

Respecting Jacquie's opinion but expressing my own.
