1931 – 2023

Mr. Douglas Lewis ‘Doug’ Whorrall CD passed away at Red Deer, Alberta on Sunday, July 30, 2023 at the age of 91 years. Doug was born in Hantsport, Nova Scotia on September 23, 1931.

In 1949 Doug joined the Royal Canadian Signal Corp and served in Kingston, Ontario. On March 12, 1951, Doug and Joyce were married just days before he was sent to the Far East (Korea) and he returned in May 1952. In the fall of 1952, Doug was discharged and then he joined the Royal Canadian Airforce, serving throughout Canada and was discharged in 1979.

Doug received the Veterans Affairs Commendation in Ottawa on November 7, 2002. He was given this Commendation for helping over fifteen hundred Veterans and Dependents of WW2, Korea War, Regular Reserve and the RCMP, this set a precedence for Korea Veterans. Doug was also presented with the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Medal in 2004 from Hon. Bob Mills MP for his tireless work in the community and his devotion to the veterans in his constituency. In April 2005, Doug received the Citizen of the Year award for all his dedication in helping Veterans and Dependents in 2004, also for his many years of volunteer work in the community. He also received the Alberta’s Centennial Medal for all his volunteer work in the Province of Alberta.

Doug instructed the youth in this community, gun safety and hunter education for over an eight-year period.

Doug was a very active member of the Royal Canadian Legion as Service Officer and was presented in 1999 with a Life Membership, he was also presented with a Meritorious Service Medal in May 2007.

He established The Korea Veterans, what they have done for our Country and our community, the sacrifices made by all our Korea Veterans. He made it a point to visit schools in our area, as a proud Korea Veteran, speaking to our youth answering questions about the Korea War. Doug has always made it a point in helping all Veterans and Dependents in obtaining a much-deserved disability pension, spending hours daily.

Doug will be lovingly remembered by his children, David (Durga) Whorrall, Doug Jr. (Gina) Whorrall, and Cyndy (Rob) Trump, and his eight grandchildren.

Doug was predeceased by daughters, Pamela, and Susan, and his wife, Joyce.

A Memorial Service will be held at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch No. 104, 5108 - 49 Avenue, Innisfail, Alberta on Saturday, August 26, 2023 at 1:00 p.m. If desired Memorial Donations may be made to the Poppy Fund, at 5108- 49 Ave. Innisfail, Alberta T4G 1R1.
