1945 – 2023

With sorrowful hearts, we announce the death of Mr. Colin Kure of Moose Mountain, Alberta, who passed away on May 9, 2023, at the age of 78 years. Colin was born on February 2, 1945, to Elmer and Helga Kure in Innisfail, Alberta, followed by sisters Janie and Michele. He grew up on the farm, scouting and enjoying the great outdoors with his cousins. He had many jobs following high school, such as a seismograph rod man, driller, and sawmill operator.

Colin married Diana Hart in 1967 and got into the cattle feeding and sheep raising business. A son, Kurt, was born in 1971, and Colin did a stint in Whitehorse, Yukon as a housing officer. In 1973, another son, Kelsey, was born and Colin assumed responsibility for the family farm, which was his pride and joy. Family life was upended when Diana died from cancer in 2001. But Colin was blessed to marry again in 2003 to Gerty Fokkens, enjoying their life at Moose Mountain until his passing.

Colin was a farmer first, working alongside his sons and grandkids until his last day. Colin filled his other time with a wide range of interests. As an avid outdoorsman and conservationist, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, canoeing, collecting arrowheads, hiking and serving on many conservation boards. After his diabetes diagnosis in 1994, he added marathon running to the list.  Colin loved rodeos, flying with his pilot’s license, coaching hockey, photography, reading history and enjoying music.  He was also an attentive and supportive grandfather, always with peppermints in his pocket and stories to tell.

Colin trusted in Jesus’ saving grace, and we look to the Lord for our hope and peace as we thank God for Colin.

He is survived by his loving wife, Gerty Kure, his son Kurt (Elaine); his son Kelsey (Tanya); fourteen grandchildren, one great-grandchild; sisters Janie and Michele (Ike), three nephews and one niece, and Gerty’s children, Jessica (James), Jonathon (Kayla) and Nathan (Kirsten), and their children. He is also survived by many other dear relatives and friends. Colin was predeceased by his wife Diana Kure, and his parents, Elmer and Helga Kure.

A Celebration of Life will be held at King of King’s Lutheran Church, Dickson, Alberta on Tuesday, May 16, at 10:00 a.m.  If desired, memorial donations may be made to the Alberta Fish & Game Wildlife Trust Fund at afga.org.
