1953 - 2020

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of Andrew “Drew” Earl Mundie on Friday, January 24, 2020 at the Innisfail Hospital at the age of 66. Drew was born in Innisfail, May 25, 1953, and was the eldest child of Naida and John “Jack” Mundie, of the Kneehill Valley District where he lived his entire life. Drew found a love of farming at a young age and had fond memories of baling “Prairie Wool” hay on his father’s John Deere 820. He was involved in 4-H for 12 years and completed many projects during that time. Following high school, he attended Olds College and earned a Livestock Management Diploma. After finishing college Drew bought his first quarter at the age of 18, continuing to purchase more land up until he bought the family homestead in 1981. In 1984 he married Sharon Cumming (Robidoux) from Unity, Saskatchewan. Together they made many happy memories raising their two daughters. Drew became president of the Alberta Canada All Breeds Association, which had a mandate to promote cattle internationally. As an annual speaker, he travelled to Brazil 4 times, as well as Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay, Bolivia, Columbia, Chile, Venezuela, Dominican Republic and most of the United States. This was one of the highlights of his life and he was always willing to share a story of his travels. Drew always thought of farming as a “family sport”. He worked closely with his father and truly enjoyed a friendship as partners. He not only enjoyed the monetary aspect of this business, but also the friendships and comradery which developed with so many people. When his father passed away in 2000, the cattle business was no longer the same for him. In 2001 he took a position with Wyeth Animal Health as a Public Relations Representative which would take him all over Western Canada promoting their cattle and horse products. Drew loved talking to livestock producers and developed many friendships through his travels. In 2006 he left Wyeth and became a realtor and partner in Realty Executives, Innisfail. As with everything he did, his greatest enjoyment was talking and working with the buyers and sellers. He stayed involved in real estate until last September. Horses were always a big part of the Mundie family, and a part of the farm from the early days with fieldwork, to chore teams, feeding cows, and even sleigh rides at Christmas. Drew inherited those genes as well, and Belgian Horses became a passion for Drew. He loved everything from the newborns to the training of young horses. He imported fillies and studs from the Amish people of Illinois and Indiana right up until 2019. Drew was an avid Bridge player and enjoyed the fellowship of his friends at their weekly bridge club. Drew is lovingly remembered by his long time friend, Laura Niemi; his two daughters, Katelyn (Nate), his two grandsons Ryker and Carson; Jacquelyn (Ian); and their mother, Sharon (Gene); his sisters, Heather (Bryan), and their sons, Michael (Ashley) and Kevin; Barb (Joe), and her children, Sarah and Jordan; his brother, Keith (Kandis), and their children Alex and Zack; and his many aunts, uncles, cousins, great-nieces and nephews. Drew is predeceased by his parents. A very special thanks to the amazing staff at the Innisfail Health Centre for their comforting and compassionate care of Drew, as well a heartfelt thank you to both Dr. Seeman and Dr. Christiansen. A Celebration of Life will be held at the Innisfail United Church, 4720 – 48th Ave., Innisfail, AB on Friday, February 7, 2020 at 1:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Innisfail Health Centre or the “Innisfail Hospital Auxiliary” 5023 – 42 Street, Innisfail, Alberta T4G 1A9 .
