SYDNEY, N.S. — Haley McDonald had a game-high 26 points to lead the No. 7-seeded Acadia Axewomen to a 74-56 win over the No. 6 UQAM Citadins in the first consolation semifinal of the 2023 Protocase Women’s Final 8 on Friday night.
McDonald, the first-team U SPORTS all-Canadian and player of the game for the Axewomen, was 4-for-10 from 3-point territory as Acadia secured their spot in the consolation final.
McDonald finished with a double-double, putting up 26 points and a game-high 10 assists for the Axewomen. The fifth-year guard added five rebounds and five steals as she led her team. Sarah Delorey added 12 points for Acadia.
For UQAM, Fredlaine Verrier earned player of the game honours for her 16-point, 11-rebound double-double. The other Verrier sister, Fredlyne, finished the game with 13 points and six rebounds.
With the win, the Axewomen advance to Sunday’s consolation final, where they will play the Calgary Dinos.
Pollyanna Storie scored a team-high 20 points to lead the No. 5 seed Calgary Dinos to an 87-61 win over the hosts and No. 8 Cape Breton Capers in the second consolation semifinal on Friday night.
Storie drained six of eight three pointers, setting up the Dinos for a matchup with Acadia.
Storie finished the night with 20 points on 58 per cent shooting. Mya Proctor was not far behind with 18 points on 9-for-11 shooting, adding three assists. Annacy Palmer contributed 15 points and five rebounds for the Dinos.
Cape Breton had three players score double digits on the night. U SPORTS second-team all-Canadian Kiyara Letlow led the way with a 21-point, 12-rebound double-double, while Chermensa Van la Par scored 17 and was awarded player of the game. Mackenzee Ryan chipped in with 15 points for the Capers.
