Hope 4 MVC Kids struggling

Tough to ask people for money when they're out of work

MOUNTAIN VIEW COUNTY — The COVID-19 pandemic has hurt the Hope 4 MVC Kids Society, which raises money to help families cover medical costs and associated expenses.

“That’s been a bit of a struggle because our usual way that we have donors and grants has obviously changed due to the current situation. So we’re looking at new ideas for that and how we can try and get new grants to continue on with that,” says society founder Lisa Nicholson.

Nicholson created the Hope 4 MVC Kids Society with the help of a friend in November 2013 when her family couldn't obtain the financial assistance they needed to help her daughters and when it was discovered that there were many more families struggling in that way as well.

“COVID-19 hit and we (decided we) can’t market in the way that we usually would,” she said during an interview.

With so many out of work due to the pandemic, Nicholson said obviously families have to look after their own financial needs first before helping others.

“We feel that our community is already suffering, and as part of that community village, we don’t want to be taking from our hard work or trying to work or people who’ve been impacted by COVID-19 donated funds. So it’s hard to do regular fundraisers.”

Nicholson is wondering how the pandemic will affect their regular fundraiser, slated for Nov. 28, once again at the Willow Lane Barn.

“Are we going to be able to raise the level of funds that we require to continue, given the community situation,” she asked.

“We feel like we’re in a bit of a rock and a hard place where we support some of the most vulnerable people in our community.

“We want to continue to support the most vulnerable in our community but how do we – you know – find sufficient funds to continue to offer that support?”

Nicholson said people are still welcome to donate via the Hope 4 MVC Kids Society web page at https://hope4mvckids.org.
