Maeghan Wild finished sixth in the 65-kilogram cadet division at the Cadet Juvenile National Wrestling Championships in Saskatoon from April 5 to 7.
Wild was among nine wrestlers from Olds High School who competed at the nationals, the team's largest-ever contingent at the championships. Wild had the best finish among OHS wrestlers.
“It was good for her because this was her first nationals she has attended. She wrestled within her abilities,” said George Grant, the Spartans' wrestling coach.
Grant said while Wild made some errors in earlier matches, she corrected those as the tournament progressed on the second day.
Grant said he was pleased with the team's results as a whole, with many wrestlers showing improvement.
“It's always a tough tournament at nationals. It's the best-of-the-best, so it's a good measuring stick to see if we're on the right page or not. They thought it was a great experience,” he said.
Other members of the Spartans who wrestled included Taylor Ormann, who competed in the 60-kilogram cadet division, Lauren Roblee, who wrestled in the 56-kilogram class, Kevin Waldron in the cadet 63-kilogram class, Austin Waldron, juvenile 76-kilogram class, Alex Roemmele, juvenile 63-kilogram division, Connor Aitken, 54-kilogram cadet class, Mitchell Ormann, 69-kilogram juvenile division and Jeremy Zawalykut in the 85-kilogram juvenile division.
Grant said now that the season has concluded, the national tournament gives members of the team motivation going into next season.
“We're going to continue practising right through to the end of June as we work with Amber Maschke in preparation of her going to the Pan Am Games,” he said.
