Despite two key acquisitions made in one week, the Olds Grizzlys are not finished with roster changes, according to their head coach and general manager.

“You're never done until the deadline. I think we have some things on our wish list that we're still looking for as far as trying to create a complete team here, but I think we made some pretty good steps here this weekend,” said Brett Hopfe.

On Nov. 7, the Grizzlys traded forward Kyle Star to the Fort McMurray Oil Barons for 20-year-old goaltender Jesse Gordichuk.

The next day, the team sent starting goaltender Jordan Piccolino to the La Ronge Ice Wolves of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) in exchange for future considerations.

Earlier that week, the Grizzlys signed former WHL defenceman Jordan Steenbergen.

In 72 games played with the Grizzlys over two seasons, Star scored 22 goals and recorded 33 assists.

Piccolino was in net for 17 games this year, recording a .883 save percentage and a 3.68 goals against average.

In 20 games with the Oil Barons last season, Gordichuk posted a .935 save percentage, setting an AJHL record.

He also recorded five shutouts and a 1.88 goals against average.

Gordichuk was injured earlier this season, allowing Zach Fortin to take over the Oil Barons' starting goaltending job.

As a result, Gordichuk suddenly found himself on the trading block.

“It was nice to get a phone call saying he was available because we thought he was an untouchable player,” Hopfe said. “We're excited to have him come in. He's a big kid, very calm, controls his body movement and controls his size to his advantage.”

The AJHL trade deadline is on Jan. 10 and while Hopfe did not provide specific details, he said the team is still shopping.

“There's definitely one player in particular we're looking for. Obviously if you can improve in any position, that's something that you look to do,” he said.
