Two of Innisfail's track stars brought back hardware from the Western Canadian Track and Field Championships in Medicine Hat July 14 and 15.
Mackenzie Ramsell and Brayden Posyluzny, both members of the Red Deer Titans track and field team were chosen to represent Team Alberta at the championships during qualifiers in St. Albert early in July. During the championships, the two were up against athletes from the Yukon, Saskatchewan and Manitoba.
“The level of competition was really difficult,” said Ramsell, who just joined the track and field team about two months ago. She was competing in track this spring at Innisfail Jr./Sr. High School and joined the Titans once school finished for the year. Even though she's new, she's pulling her weight. Ramsell competed in the U-15 midget division and brought home a gold for her 4.92-metre long jump, a bronze for her 1.5m high jump and a silver in triple jump. She also placed silver with her relay team in the 4x100m relay.
“I was kind of overwhelmed. I've only been doing this for two months; some people have been doing it for a year or more.”
Ramsell will compete in the Alberta Summer Games in Lethbridge this coming weekend. She's also heading to P.E.I in August to compete at a national level.
“It's really exciting,” she said.
Posyluzny also competed at the midget level during the western championships. He placed gold for his 38.07m discuss throw, bronze for his 12.03m shot put, fifth for triple jump and eighth for long jump.
“I was excited,” he said of placing. He too said the competition was tough and said the team had been practising a few times a week to get ready for the championships. He will also be heading to Lethbridge this weekend for the Alberta Summer Games.
Coach Daren Posyluzny said their results helped Team Alberta capture the overall title in the midget and youth category. Points are earned for placing and the Team Alberta Midget and Youth finished first overall against the other provinces.
