Tri-Active program a hit with kids

The Community Learning Campus's Tri-Active program is underway and well-attended, selling out within a week-and-a-half, according to fitness supervisor Brittany Ehmann.

The Community Learning Campus's Tri-Active program is underway and well-attended, selling out within a week-and-a-half, according to fitness supervisor Brittany Ehmann.

Two groups are currently enrolled, each group of 22 children participating in one session per week. They age from grades 1-8 and are bused in from schools in town. For a $65 fee, the program lasts nine weeks.

CLC fitness staff lead the sessions, which focus on what they call "physical literacy" and "fundamental movements," such as running, jumping and throwing but also balance and coordination.

Those skills can sometimes be overlooked in organized sport settings, Ehmann said.

The Tri-Active program helps build an athletic foundation if kids choose to pursue sports.

"I think if they teach fundamental movements, those kids will be more successful in sports," she said.

Some of the activities on tap include snowshoeing, parkour (going through obstacles, etc.), swimming, hiking and court sports.

The focus is on fun and trying new activities, Ehmann said.
