Track athlete wins gold at Calgary meet, headed to provincial and national competitions

A local athlete struck gold in the midget hammer throw at the Calgary Track and Field meet on June 15.Andreas Troschke, 15, recorded a throw of 49.09 metres, almost nine metres ahead of the second-place winner.The competition was a qualifying event for the Alberta Summer Games, Western Canadian Track and Field Championships and Nationals.Thanks to his long toss, Troschke qualified for all three events.At the Western Canadian competition, held in Saskatoon in July, Troschke will compete for Team Alberta in the hammer throw and discus.He will also represent the province in the hammer throw at Nationals, held in Langley, B.C., in August.The Alberta Summer Games take place in Airdrie in July and Troschke will compete in the javelin, discus, shot put, hammer throw and 100-metre race.Troschke, an Olds High School student, currently holds the provincial record for the indoor hammer [email protected]
