Five members of the Olds High School cross-country running team placed first or second in their categories at the county championships held in Sundre on Sept. 25.

Anushree Patel finished first in the four-kilometre girls Grade 11 run, while Laura Klinck won the two-kilometre Grade 9 girls race. Janelle Graham finished first in the three-kilometre girls Grade 10 run while Matt Gaudette finished second in the four-kilometre Grade 10 boys race and Mitch Ormann finished second in the six-kilometre Grade 12 boys race. Alex Rommele finished third in the Grade 12 boys six-kilometre race. Eleven Spartans competed at the event.

Sherry Leppa, one of the team's co-coaches, said the weather was much better for the runners on Sept. 25 than the previous race in Sundre the week before.

“It was very cold, but way better conditions,” she said.

Leppa added that she's looking forward to good results in Canmore on Oct. 9 at the south central zone races. All 14 team members will attend.

“I anticipate a minimum of a third of students (on the team) will go to provincials,” she said.

The provincial meet will be in Drayton Valley on Oct. 19.
