Sundre women’s bonspiel A Royal Affair

Players from 16 teams – including rinks from Rocky Mountain House, Olds and Cremona – recently came to Sundre Curling Rink

SUNDRE – The local women’s curling league recently enjoyed a royally good time on the ice.

The Sundre Curling Club hosted 16 teams – including players from Rocky Mountain House, Olds and Cremona – on Feb. 10-12 for the annual women’s bonspiel, with this year’s theme featuring A Royal Affair, said Kris Burkholder, club member.

“Most of the teams dressed up and it was a fun-filled evening,” she said.

The A event winners were skip Sheila Shea, third Donna Waldroff, second Terry Nelson, and lead Holly Schneider.

The B event winners were skip Amy Venneman, third Lindsay Viney, second Kayla Notley, and lead Jake Taylor.

Taking the C event was skip Rene Gibson, third Peggy Kadey, second Loris Wyhony, and lead Rita Collier.

The next bonspiel, presented by the Sundre Oilmen’s Association, is an event being billed as brand new for both men as well as women and takes place March 10-12.

Teams can be comprised of either all men, all women, or a mix, with each rink also being required to have at least two players previously or currently involved in the energy sector.

The Sundre Open Bonspiel season wind-up event then takes place March 30 to April 2.
