Strong showing for Olds gymnasts in Alberta Winter Games

Carmen Watson, Penny Symes represented Zone 2 at provincial event

OLDS — Two 13-year-old Olds gymnasts turned in strong performances during the Alberta Winter Games.

Carmen Watson, who competed in level 6, placed fourth on beam with a score of 9.550 out of a possible 10 and 14th overall with a score of 36.225 out of 40.

Penny Symes, who competed in level 7, placed seventh on beam with a score of 9.275. As a result, Symes advanced to the beam event finals the next day, where she too placed 14th overall with a score of 35.950.

Zone 2 which both Symes and Watson represented, finished the team finals with silver medals in levels 6 and 7.

Watson and Symes are members of the Imagine Gymnastics club in Olds. The club’s head coach, Michelle Jaffray, served as a coach during the Games, which were held Feb.16-19 in Grande Prairie.

Symes, Watson and their teammates are now ready for the Hay City Classic, the club’s home competition, which will be held March 8-10 at the Ralph Klein Centre in Olds.

Jaffray says more than 650 athletes are expected to attend.
