Spartans football club endures first loss of season

An interception that was returned for a touchdown with only a few seconds remaining in the game sealed the Olds High School Spartans’ fate in football action against the George McDougall High School Mustangs in Airdrie on Sept. 28.

An interception that was returned for a touchdown with only a few seconds remaining in the game sealed the Olds High School Spartans’ fate in football action against the George McDougall High School Mustangs in Airdrie on Sept. 28.

The Spartans lost for the first time this season, 27-14.

George Grant, the Spartans’ head coach, said despite a few mistakes that proved costly, the team was still within striking distance up until the last few minutes of the game.

"We were definitely in the game from the start to the end," he said.

Grant said despite the Spartans playing well overall, the Mustangs were able to capitalize on small mistakes. The Spartans defence played well, stifling the Mustangs attack. But he said the offence was inconsistent, making some good plays and then at other points in the game making errors. Several Spartan fumbles were recovered by the Mustangs.

"After having two weeks off from our previous game, a little bit of rust was starting to show and I think that might have been the difference is that we weren’t as sharp as we could have been and have been earlier on in the season," he said. "There’s no substitute for games and really being forced to be accountable for every play, because in a practice if you drop a ball or miss a block, we can just tell the guys to do it over again, but in a game you don’t get that luxury of doing that."

The Spartans were due to play again at Normie Kwong Park on Sept. 30 against the Chestermere High School Lakers and travel to Brooks on Oct. 4 to play against the Brooks Composite High School Buffaloes.

The Spartans are now 2-1 on the season.
