Registration for the Innisfail Triathlon has opened and coordinators are hoping to see more local bodies register.

“There's still 12 weeks left to train and register,” said Gayle Chapiel, volunteer coordinator for the Innisfail Triathlon Committee. She's hoping people who have been working out and working towards a fitness goal might be interested in the Sept. 8 triathlon sprint.

“People try it because of the variety,” said explaining that running can get boring and biking can get uncomfortable. “Its overall structure gives a good cardio workout and a variety of training,” she said.

Last year there were 263 athletes, only 27 of whom were from Innisfail. She said the event draws a lot of professional athletes to compete in the 750-metre swim, 20-kilometre bike and five-km run but added the triathlon has a friendly, non-intimidating feel that is great for first-timers.

She said they also have the Tri It event — a 300-m swim, five-km bike ride and two-km run that is usually offered to youngsters who aren't yet 16 and can't compete in the full distance. She said it's also good for families who want to split the distance between three people or for people who want to give the triathlon a try but aren't ready for the sprint distance.
