Phantoms hosts spirit of the sticks

The Innisfail Phantom Minor Lacrosse Association held its fifth annual Spirit of the Sticks tournament June 8 to 10 in both Innisfail and Olds.

The Innisfail Phantom Minor Lacrosse Association held its fifth annual Spirit of the Sticks tournament June 8 to 10 in both Innisfail and Olds.

“It was just wonderful, we had really positive feedback from the different teams,” said the association's president Mandy Mitchell who said people signed up as far back as December to get play time.

The tournament brought in 32 teams covering novice to midget levels with teams travelling from all over including Edmonton and Calgary, Parkland County and the County of Lethbridge.

In order to accommodate all of the players, the Phantoms were able to use arena space in Olds.

“We had some people tell us this was the best tournament in the province,” said Mitchell, who added the tournament is a major fundraiser for the association.

As for results, the Innisfail midgets placed bronze. The two Innisfail bantam teams played against each other for fifth and sixth place in a close “one-goal” game, said Mitchell. The Service Credit Union bantams ended up taking fifth with the Co-op bantams taking sixth.

“The peewee team struggled this weekend,” said Mitchell, explaining the group placed eighth.
