For some, three periods of ice hockey a day might be enough.
But when it comes to raising money for the Kids Cancer Care Foundation, a local fundraiser plans to have players hitting the ice for 24 hours.
The 24-hour hockey game is returning to Penhold after raising over $3,000 last year for the cause. Organizer Trevor Jenner said the event starts at noon Sept. 15 and runs until noon Sept. 16.
“I'm looking for about two more teams,” Jenner said. The event will see multiple teams facing off over the day, playing in a round-robin format for “bragging rights” at the end.
Jenner said there's no trophy to help “keep the real reason” driving the event at the forefront.
Jenner's hoping spectators will come out to support the players in their efforts.
“It's a family event,” he said. The games will be in the Penhold Regional Multiplex. There are plans for a silent auction, 50/50 draw, a bouncy castle and a mobile unit of Bears & Wishes on hand.
Volunteers to help run the event and “free-agent” players willing to be on any team short participants are also needed.
“Each player's going to pay $60 to play,” Jenner said. That money can be raised through pledges or just paid by the player. “We encourage them to raise more.”
For those thinking of hitting the ice, Jenner said they're going to try and schedule three-hour breaks between games, though there will be some back-to-back sessions. There will also be an hour-long break in the day where they'll hold a skills competition.

“Hopefully we get a good turnout,” Jenner said. The Penhold Fall Festival and Fair is also running that weekend, starting the evening of Sept. 14 and continuing Sept. 15, for those who want to check out both events.
