Pee Wee girls host provincials, take second

The girls were one of nine teams storming the Innisfail Arena March 23 to 25 during the Investors Group Hockey Alberta Pee Wee B Female Provincial Championships.

Friday morning was the first game for the local team who went up against the Fairview Crashers. Innisfail won 4-2 with goals from Faith Gette, Taryn Hunt, Sydney Norrie, and Kyla Westman. Assists came from Makenna Doel, Faith Gette, Samantha Thompson and Maddie Linski.

Next up was the Okotoks Oilers which was a hard fought battle with the ladies trading goals right to the final minites of the game. The Flyers came out on top 5-4. Faith Gette scored all five goals with assists coming from Taryn Hunt with two, Sydney Norrie two, Samantha Thompson, Makenna Doel and Sara Gette each with one.

Saturday, the Flyers, sitting comfortable with three wins went up against Edmonton Thunder. They scored 11 goals against Edmonton for a 11-0 victory. Hope Holbein scored three goals, Faith Gette, four, Sydney Norrie two, Sara Gette and Maddie Linski, one. Assists came from Makenna Doel with two,Tayrn Hunt, two, Faith Gette, two, Samantha Thompson, Sydney Norrie, Hope Holbein, and Kailynn Rose all with one and with Chloe Altenhofen getting the shut out.

With the Flyers winning all four of their round robin games it set them up to play on the blue side of the arena in the semi-finals Sunday morning. The Flyers faced off against Lloydminster Wizards during the 9a.m. semi final game.

As soon as the puck was dropped Faith Gette took off and scored. After that it was a hard fought battle between the two teams with both goalies coming up with save after save. Then in the third period Innisfail sealed the win with a goal from Faith Gette. The final score was 2-0 with Chloe Altenhofen getting her second shutout of the tournament.

With that win the Flyers moved onto the gold medal game against the Okotoks Oilers, the team the Flyers had played and beaten Friday. With the stands filling up with fans the two teams began to battle for gold. At the 10 minute mark of the first period Okotoks drew first blood with goal from Halle Bondarchuck . The two teams continued to battle with great play from both goaltenders. Innisfail drew even with three minutes left in the second period with a goal from Faith Gette. Both teams continued to battle until they needed overtime to determine a winner. At the five minute mark on the second overtime period Okotoks scored to win gold and Innisfail to get silver.
