OLDS — The Olds Koinonia Christian School (OKCS) senior girls basketball team is a provincial silver medalist.

The team won that medal during the provincials, held last weekend.

The Royals steamrolled over their opposition in the quarter-finals and semifinals but were no match for Stirling (near Lethridge) who absolutely dominated the final, winning by 32 points. Head coach Diane Sewell recalls the score as being 75-43.

“They kicked our butts,” she said during an interview with the Albertan.

However, that’s understandable, as basketball is huge in the rural Lethbridge area.

“I mean, they were hitting threes all over the court and they're just very, very good,” she said. “They have one girl who's going on to play at the university level and she is phenomenal.

“They are very disciplined and they are very skilled and they just were better than us.”

It would have been great to have won the gold medal, but Sewell said finishing second in the province and matching up against great team like Stirling is still a real accomplishment.

She noted the Royals were ranked second in the province all season so this result basically validated that ranking.

“We went in second and we finished second, so I was very pleased with that result,” Sewell said.

“Stirling, was definitely the first place team and we were definitely the second place team,” she said. It was definitely where we belonged.”
