OC women's basketball split with SAIT

Olds College's women's basketball team suffered its first defeat of the ACAC season against the SAIT Trojans on Nov. 22, losing 76-50 on the road.

The Broncos now have a 9-1 record and will next host a pair of games against the undefeated Lethbridge College Kodiaks from November 28 to 29.

“I think they're very good. I'm not sure they're unbeatable. I think someone will knock them off. Why not us,” said Broncos head coach Reg Carrick.

The loss followed a 70-62 win over the Trojans the night before at the Ralph Klein Centre.

During that game, fourth-year post player Jasmine Williams scored 18 points on eight-for-12 shooting, adding 19 rebounds and a block.

Third-year guard Marie Lupe also had 18 points on eight-of-16 shooting, with seven rebounds, four assists and three steals.

The Broncos were efficient from the floor, shooting 46 per cent while holding the Trojans to just 32 per cent.

But the game was a lot tighter than it could have been, due in large part to the 36 turnovers committed by the Broncos, compared to 19 by the Trojans.

“I think if we had minimized that, we would have done a lot better,” Lupe said.

That's a tradeoff for pushing the game pace and running the floor, but there's little doubt Carrick wants to cut down the number of extra possessions given to the opposing team.

“We want to go up-tempo. When you go up-tempo, you're going to have some turnovers, but we're just too loose with the ball right now,” he said.

Playing up-tempo has paid off so far though, with the Broncos currently averaging 70.9 points per game, second-most in the ACAC South.

They're also second in points-per-game allowed at 55.9.

“We try to run as much as we can,” Lupe said. “If everyone's running, someone's going to be open. Someone's going to get the open layup.”
