Three strikes, you're out!
Despite the freezing temperatures, six teams played outdoor baseball over the weekend while dressed in Hawaiian themed clothing.
It was part of the 9th annual Swing for Charity, which almost didn't take place this year.
“It wasn't going to happen this year because the old board couldn't get any new people to take over, so they were just going to let the whole thing die,” said board member Tammy Phillips.
“A few of us didn't want to see that happen because it's so much money that's so much good for the community. So we kind of took it over at the last minute.”
She said it has been challenging for the committee, composed of five people, to put it together last minute.
The number of teams was down this year. In past years there has been at least 10 teams involved.
The event took place Saturday and Sunday at the ball diamonds and there was a cabaret Saturday evening at the Sundre Community Centre.
This year's theme was Hawaiian Luau.
“We were just trying to go with something fun and, you know, it's the middle of winter so something to cheer us up,” she said.
Although most of the teams were local, one of the teams came from Lac La Biche, she said. There was originally seven teams entered for the two-day tournament, but some people dropped out due to illness, she said.
This year's proceeds are going to the Aquaplex, Nutrition for Learning and the River Valley School parent council to upgrade playground equipment.
She said donations are still being accepted.
“We need as much support as possible.”
