The midget girls hockey team will be in Brooks this weekend competing at the provincial level.

The Boarding Kennels Midget Flyers, made up of 15 girls between the ages of 15 and 19 have been working steadily this season, explained Sherry Leppa, parent of a team member. Eight of the players are new to the team.

"The girls are really excited and we hope it goes well," she said.

The team, made up of players from Innisfail, Spruce View, Delburne and Rimbey finished fourth in the league for the regular season.

They competed in their first playoff round Feb. 25 and 26 against Sylvan Lake winning 4-1 and 4-3.

The girls went on to play the second round of playoffs March 4 and lost two of the three games. Leppa said winning one game was a "highlight for the girls as Red Deer's team went undefeated all season."

During zones, the Flyers defeated Sylvan Lake 1-0 and 4-3 in a two-game total points provincial playdown to capture the Zone 4 title and advance to the provincial tournament this weekend, March 15 to 18.

"It's nice with the smaller team the girls have a lot of fun. It's competitive but they keep things in perspective and make sure to make it fun," said Leppa.
