Lack of players hampers Athletics' season

The Olds Athletics have suspended Parkland Baseball League play for the 2013 season because too few players came out to play.

Jeremy Tookey, who played first base for the team the past two years, said the decision to not field a team this year was made in March after he contacted past players who said they had too many work and family commitments to come out on a regular basis this season.

“We put out an ad in the paper, we put out ads on the radio looking for people wanting to and willing to play and basically we got about five people to show interest in it,” he said.

Tookey said at a meeting in the middle of March time commitments were discussed.

“Guys just said they couldn't commit 100 per cent. It's not fair to the guys that do commit and it's not fair to the other teams coming into town,” he said.

Tookey said an attempt will be made again next year to see if enough players can be found, and “if the league will allow us back.

“I guess it all depends on that as well.”
