A new season of sports has begun at Innisfail Junior Senior High School (IHS) and students are enthusiastically gearing up to start the outdoor season.

The senior boys soccer team has started practicing and will be coached this year by vice principal Narsh Ramrattan.

Registrations for the high school football team occurred last week when about 35 students signed up, which is an increase from the team of about 20 players last season.

This year’s football coaching staff includes Trevor Woofe and Jim Brittain, both teachers at IHS, and Donny Hill and Greyson Beardsworth, who are community volunteers.

Meanwhile, the indoor badminton season is wrapping up with the high school area one championships taking place this past Monday night.

The high school students had competed in an exhibition game against Notre Dame last week, which worked well to get the students warmed up and give them an idea of where they stood against the other teams, said coach and IHS teacher Dean Woroniuk.

“The team is full of enthusiasm, energy, and skilled players,” said Woroniuk of his 22 students on the badminton team.

The junior high badminton season is also underway. The Grade 9 team is coached by Lorraine Uloth, while the Grade 8 squad is led by Jen Littke and Caitlin Eyestone.
