Two of Innisfail's softball teams took tournament titles from Calgary May 13.

The peewee girls won four out of five of their games during the Nose Creek Softball tournament beating the Nose Creek Jabber Jays in the gold medal game. In league play the girls have two wins, one tie and one loss.

The bantam girls also took gold in their division at the same tournament in Calgary.

The crowd went wild as the Innisfail Indians Bantam Girls' left fielder, Emma Heistad, caught the final pop fly of the tournament. The team pitchers Nicole Jacobson and Joey Cooke helped to cinch the gold with their accuracy and quick arms. The whole team melded as they hit hard, played quick, and demonstrated true spirit. “Each game was played better than the one before; we are very proud of the girls,” said coaches Carey MacDonald and Paul Livingstone. The team won four of its six games.

Rick Blais, league liason, said this is one of the strongest years yet for the league in terms of numbers.

“This is the first year since 2004 we have teams all the way from mites to midgets,” he said. “We have a really good group coming up and we hope to keep it going,” he said of the future.

As well, the league is planning its fourth annual tournament June 15 to 17 which will bring in 40 teams and host 84 games.

“This is probably one of the biggest tournaments in Central Alberta,” he said of the turnout. All groups except for midgets will play.

“We weren't able to get enough midget teams together.”
