Five medals and four broken club records for Rapids at Red Deer swim meet

A trio of Olds athletes brought home a major medal haul the weekend of February 9 and 10.

The Olds Rapids Swim Club captured five medals at the meet, including a gold for Jazzlyn Thompson in the 200-metre butterfly stroke category, a silver for Dawson Green in the 50-metre backstroke, a pair of bronzes for Victoria Wagstaff in the 50-metre and 200-metre breaststroke competitions and a bronze for Green in the 50-metre breast stroke.

Thompson and Wagstaff also posted new club records at the meet, with Thompson beating Jayna Templeton's record for 11- and 12-year-olds in the 200-metre butterfly stroke category with a time of 2:27.65, as well as her own record for 11- and 12-year-olds in the 100-metre individual medley with a time of 1:26.59.

Wagstaff broke Phoenix Smith's all-time club record in the 50-metre breaststroke as well as Smith's record for 15- and 16-year-olds in the 50-metre breaststroke with a time of 40.89.

The record-breaking performance has qualified Wagstaff for the Alberta Open/Senior Provincial Championships in March.

Altogether, the club sent eight swimmers to the meet.

The club's next meet is the provincial age group regional trials in Calgary from February 21 to 23.
