The 34th edition of the Olds Farmers Bonspiel and the 31st year for the Farmerettes Bonspiel will get underway Feb. 11 and run until Feb. 15 at the Olds Curling Club.

Teams from Didsbury, Carstairs, Cremona, Innisfail, Caroline, Wimborne and Torrington will join local rinks for the five days of competition. Following the competition, an awards ceremony and a banquet will be held on Feb. 15 at Olds College.

A twist to the bonspiel is that a group of three curlers is matched with one person who represents one of the sponsoring organizations, and that person will join a team as the fourth member of a rink.

ìIt's pretty well tradition. We've got a few curlers who have been to every one of them,î said Gene Leonard, chair of the bonspiel's organizing committee, noting that he's missed only one event.

Asked what the allure of the event is for longtime participants, Leonard said seeing familiar faces doing an activity everyone enjoys is what draws participants year after year.

ìJust the camaraderie and the enjoyment of doing it,î he said.
